Community Cleanup Initiatives
Pickering's community clean-up initiatives include:
20-Minute Pickering Makeover
Pickering joined forces with neighboring municipalities for the GTA wide 20-Minute Makeover in 2005 and has since been using this opportunity to pick up litter around City streets, parks, schools and workplaces in our community. In total, over 67,000 participants have taken part in this annual event.
Pickering's 2012 spring makeover was a huge success! The 8th Annual 20-Minute Pickering Makeover was held on Friday, April 20, 2012 with more than 6,500 people helping the cause. Thanks to the numerous businesses, schools, community groups and neighbourhood associations for their tremendous efforts.
Join us for our 2013 Pickering cleanup event on April 19!
Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Every September, thousands of volunteers across the country unite to eliminate aquatic garbage. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup began in 1994 and has become one of the largest in the world. Each year over 47,000 Canadians participate in cleanup activities along our shorelines.
On September 15, 2012 we partnered with Toronto and Region Conservation to host a community cleanup at Rotary Frenchman's Bay West Park. Many community volunteers helped us to remove over 150 plastic bags, hundreds of plastic bottle caps, food wrappers and hundreds of other items from our Lake Ontario shoreline.
Pitch-in Party
Host a Pitch-in Party anytime from April to November. Gather your neighbours, family, workplace, school or association and donate some time to cleaning up a local greenspace, creek, trail or neighbourhood. The City can even suggest some areas that need a helping hand.
We will provide bags & gloves and will pick up and dispose of the waste at the end of your event. Contact us to get involved!
If you are organizing a cleanup please read the brochure, Safety First: Simple Steps for a safe litter cleanup event.
