Garbage Collection & Waste Management

Overview

The Waste Management By-law 5422/98 outlines the collection system for garbage and other waste materials you may want to dispose of.

What you should know?

Homeowners are required to place their garbage at the curb side no earlier than 6:00 pm the day before the designated collection day, and no later than 7:00 am on the day of collection.

Garbage must be placed in smooth surfaced containers weighing less than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or in heavy-duty plastic bags weighing less than 23 kilograms (50 pounds).

Recycling must be placed in a blue bin or another returnable container approved in the Region of Durham's Recycling Guidelines.

Compostable materials must be placed in the green bin provided by the Region.

Yard waste must be separated and set out in an acceptable container such as a paper yard waste bag. Sticks, branches and tree limbs are to be securely tied into bundles less than 1 meter in length.

Any waste or garbage which is not collected for any reason should be removed from the curb side prior to 8:00 pm on the designated collection day.

Uncollectable Materials

The majority of these uncollectable materials can be disposed of at the Miller Waste Transfer Station located at 1220 Squires Beach Road, Pickering, Ontario  905.426.4222.

  • swill or organic material not drained or wrapped
  • liquids
  • hay and straw
  • hot ashes, explosives or any other incendiary
  • sod, earth or stone
  • tree stumps, trunks and branches in excess of 50 millimetres in diameter
  • grass clippings
  • automotive parts
  • building material or building rubbish
  • biomedical waste
  • hazardous waste
