Sustainability

The City's award winning sustainability program has its origins in a Council-appointed Committee that was created to provide advice on the development of sustainability standards for all new development in Pickering.

Following receipt of the Committee's report, Council agreed that sustainability standards would best be developed through a comprehensive City-wide sustainability program. This led to the launch of the City's Sustainable Pickering program and the creation of Ontario's first municipal Office of Sustainability. At that time Council also established a Sustainable Pickering Advisory Committee (SPAC), made up of members of Council to provide advice and assistance to the Office of Sustainability.

The Sustainable Pickering program has grown and evolved, but has remained grounded in 5 broad sustainability objectives:  Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy, Healthy Society, Responsible Development, and Responsible Consumption.

The Sustainable Pickering program is also reflected in the City's corporate priorities, through an emerging concept we call Sustainable Placemaking.
