Sustainable Neighbourhoods

What is a sustainable neighbourhood?

Member of public looking at information displayA sustainable neighbourhood is a place where people want to live now, and in the future. It is a neighbourhood that is socially, environmentally and economically healthy; a place that is safe, well planned and built to last. Sustainable neighbourhoods:

  • are socially cohesive and diverse, with a mix of housing types and employment opportunities
  • give priority to walking, cycling and transit
  • encourage energy efficiency
  • promote efficient use of resources
  • have residential areas located close to recreational and commercial services with pedestrian and cycling connections

What is the City doing to promote sustainable neighbourhoods?

In new neighbourhoods

For new neighbourhoods and new developments, the City of Pickering has developed two sets of guidelines.  The Sustainable Development Guidelines dated 2007 are for urban Pickering.  In 2011, the Sustainable Placemaking Guidelines were created for Seaton.  Both guidelines focus on:

  • compact mixed use community structure
  • pedestrian-scaled neighbourhoods
  • transit-supportive neighbourhoods
  • linked open space system
  • natural and cultural heritage preservation
  • significant employment areas
  • pedestrian and bicycle routes
  • minimized impacts to natural features and stream crossings

In existing neighbourhoods

For existing neighbourhoods, the City is working on a Sustainability Scorecard to measure sustainability in neighbourhoods based on the following six attributes:

  • complete & connected
  • land-efficient & transit-friendly
  • safe & comfortable
  • adaptable & resilient
  • energy & resource efficient
  • green & healthy
