Pickering, ON, January 4, 2021 – After opening its doors 37 years ago, the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex (CHDRC) is getting ready to undergo major renovations.

In January, 2021, phased construction will begin to address many of the facility’s aging components, systems, and key amenities. Completing construction under the current COVID-19 health and safety measures, while facility occupancy is significantly reduced, will minimize disruption to users and operations, and the City looks forward to returning a newly-renovated CHDRC to its community in late 2021.

“We are committed to supporting healthy lifestyles through the promotion of a variety of recreational, program, and leisure opportunities,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “This renovation will bring a dynamic design and functionality to one of our City’s most popular recreation facilities, and allow us to better serve the diverse needs of our evolving community.”

Renovation details

The scope of the project includes a complete gut renovation of the existing male and female change rooms for both members and non-members, extension of the second floor exercise area and related improvements, upgrades to existing finishes throughout the ground floor of the lobby and concourse and consolidation of existing service counters into a single point of service. Additional related work such as lifecycle water main replacements and upgrades to building life safety systems have been incorporated for efficiency.

Community engagement

The City completed extensive public and user engagement, as well as detailed conceptual designs, to ensure that the renovation was reflective of the community’s needs and that the facility continues to deliver the excellent service and amenities that have made it a popular recreational destination since opening its doors in 1983.
