City of Pickering and Canada Bread enhance local community garden

Posted on Thursday October 10, 2019

The City of Pickering recently partnered with Canada Bread Company Ltd. to help pollinators by expanding a naturalized area and planting pollinator-friendly plants.

Canada Bread employees, City staff, and Members of Council planted and mulched 300 pollinator-friendly plants. This is the second year that Canada Bread, a Pickering based company, has funded this planting through their Good Neighbour program – a program focused on making a positive impact in local communities by preserving the environment, helping local organizations, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Pollinators such as butterflies, birds, bats and bees play a vital role in maintaining a healthy environment and sustainable food system. The City of Pickering and many community partners, including Canada Bread, have been taking action to help address this issue. A few of the City’s accomplishments to date include:

  • becoming one of the first Canadian members of the tri-national Mayors’ Monarch Pledge
  • planting Monarch Watch certified gardens and training volunteers to maintain the sites
  • installing solitary bee habitat boxes
  • naturalizing previously mowed areas
  • hosting free educational workshops

“I am proud of Pickering’s continued commitment to protecting our pollinators, and for participating in these incredible initiatives,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “Our pollinators are of great importance to the health of our environment and community.”

“The Good Neighbour program aims to make a difference in the communities that we live and work in,” said Joe McCarthy, President, Canada Bread. “The program promotes community projects, like the Pollinator Project, that align to our purpose of building a sustainable, highly productive and deeply humane company. By giving back to the communities that we operate in, we directly support local organizations and promote healthier lifestyles.”
