Update #17

Pickering, ON, May 29, 2020 - On Thursday evening, City of Pickering staff surprised residents during a live watch party, lighting up City Hall in blue to honour all frontline and essential workers.

The broadcast included the following statement from the City’s Chief Administrative Officer, Tony Prevedel:

“Tonight, we light Pickering City Hall as a heartfelt sign of thanks for all of the frontline and essential workers keeping our loved ones safe and our city moving during these trying times.”

At 9:30 pm, the front of Pickering City Hall illuminated with blue lights and messages of recognition and thanks. The display will continue through June 4.

Following the province’s announcement to extend emergency orders to June 9, the City felt that a clear message of encouragement, hope, love, and appreciation was essential to recognize the endurance and dedication of the community throughout these difficult times. Staff quickly responded by creating this initiative and were thrilled by the immediate response from the community.

In the hospitals, factories, roads, and stores, there are essential workers whose courage and perseverance has given the community hope. The City wants to recognize these local heroes and invites its residents to do the same.

If members of the public know an essential worker on the frontlines, or an organization that is going above and beyond during these unprecedented times, they are encouraged to share their appreciation on social media and tag @CityofPickering #pickeringproud.
