City of Pickering Recognizes the Passing of Hazel McCallion
Pickering, ON, January 29, 2023 – The Mayor and Members of Council of the City of Pickering express their collective sorrow on the passing of former Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion. All flags at City of Pickering facilities will be flown at half-mast to recognize her passing.
Quote:
“As one of Canada’s longest ever serving mayors, Hazel McCallion, was a trailblazer in municipal politics who later became a living legend. Her political career bridged over six different decades and in that span she impressed all that had met her with her unwavering commitment to her community, business acumen, and no-nonsense leadership style.
She was the true embodiment of what it meant to be a public servant. Even after she retired as Mississauga’s longest serving mayor, she continued to serve the community in a number of ways, such as being appointed Sheridan College’s first Chancellor, and serving on the board of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
As mayor, I want to personally acknowledge and thank Hazel for the role she played in advocating for the rights of municipalities across the province. She rarely took no for an answer and didn’t hesitate to take on ministers, premiers, or prime ministers to ensure that Mississauga and its sister municipalities received their fair shake from the senior levels of government.
Her indomitable spirit and unparalleled legacy shall endure and continue to inspire those who are called to public service.”
