Posted on Tuesday April 06, 2021

Pickering, ON, April 6, 2021 – The City of Pickering is proud to announce that it has received $99,400 in provincial and federal funding for one of Pickering’s most cherished pillars of the arts, culture, and heritage landscape – the Pickering Museum Village.

The Museum Village ignites imaginations through a living history museum that fosters a connection to Pickering by collecting, preserving, and interpreting artifacts and social culture.

Each year, the City actively seeks out, applies for, and receives funding that assists with the cost of providing a broad and diverse array of municipal services, programs, events, and critical infrastructure investments. Visit pickering.ca/grants for details.

Grant Summary

Government of Canada - $30,000, Museum Assistance Program

- Collections Storage Project

The Museum houses over 10,000 artifacts in its collection, ranging from early habitation to 30 years before present day. This grant will fund the hire of a new Museum Specialist to oversee the scope of work, which includes increasing storage capacity, completing inventory and tracking, and relocating artifacts from poor storage conditions to purpose built museum storage. Conservation treatments will also be performed on artifacts to repair past damage, clean, and stabilize artifacts for moving.

Province of Ontario - $44,400, Rural Economic Development Program

- Restoration and marketing of Greenwood Blacksmith Shop

The Greenwood Blacksmith Shop dates to 1857 and will be undergoing structural repairs, select cladding replacement, window and roof repairs, and upgraded electrical and interior/exterior lighting. Due to the extent of the repair work, the shop will not be featured in 2021 programming or tours. The shop is expected to re-launch, Spring 2022. The grant will be used toward exhibit development, and marketing for the Greenwood Blacksmith Shop project in an effort to draw regional tourists to the new attraction.

Province of Ontario - $25,000, Community Museum Digital Capacity Top Up Grant

- Digital initiatives

The Pickering Museum Village participates in the Ontario Standards for Community Museum programs, administrated by the Province, and as such was eligible to apply for this funding. The grant funded recently upgraded WIFI throughout the museum village, installation of security cameras, and purchase of hardware to enable virtual programming in an effort to adapt to the challenges presented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Museum is also offering a range of virtual education programs while on-site field trips are restricted due to the pandemic.
