Update #3

Pickering, ON, March 17, 2020

Following the Province of Ontario’s decision to declare a state of emergency today, the City of Pickering has opened its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).  While the City had already closed all of its facilities to the public and suspended all City-run programs, events, and meetings, the opening of its EOC formalizes the need for staff to continue meeting (in person and via teleconference) on a daily basis to enhance the level of coordination amongst all departments and divisions.

Although most staff are working from home, Pickering City Hall and the Operations Centre remain active, but not accessible to the public. The public should be assured that service levels with respect to roads, infrastructure, and winter operations will be maintained and Customer Care Centre representatives will be available by telephone or email to answer queries.

“While our doors remain closed, we want to assure our community that we are still diligently working behind the scenes to ensure the continuity of critical operations,” said Deputy Mayor, Kevin Ashe.  “Every single Member of Council is here working with senior management, and coordinating efforts with our government partners and the greater community to ensure that we are prepared to respond as the situation evolves.”

In addition, the Province has asked municipalities to deploy their by-law officers to help ensure that businesses comply with the mandated closures and/or modified service delivery.  As such, City of Pickering Municipal Enforcement Officers will visit various commercial plazas to ensure that any restaurants or bars that are still operating are only offering delivery and take out options, and that all licensed child care centres are closed.  Should any members of the public be aware of any similar businesses operating outside of these parameters, they are advised to contact the Customer Care Centre at 905.683.7575 or customercare@pickering.ca.

As the gateway to the east GTA, Pickering (population 94,000) is strategically located where Toronto, York and Durham Regions meet. An award-winning municipality, Pickering is slated for significant economic and residential growth; offering an unparalleled quality of life for those who live, work, and play here. Its dynamic City Centre has been designated by the Province of Ontario as both an Urban Growth Centre and Mobility Hub, and continues to evolve as a preferred destination for creative learning, memorable events, and unique experiences at the heart of a vibrant, connected, and engaged community.
