Pickering Museum Village will be offering field trips in French this fall. Following on the heels of a successful spring season with record-breaking student numbers, Pickering Museum Village continues to adapt to teacher needs.

Select programs will be offered in French starting this fall school year. The Blacksmith Apprentice Quest field trip program will offer French immersion students the opportunity to solve puzzles, hunt for hidden tools and apprentice-made items, all while learning about the role and responsibility of young apprentices in the 19th century. The program includes independent exploration of the new Greenwood Blacksmith Shop exhibit space, designed with children in mind.

Students will learn about what school was like in the fully French School Days field trip program. A similar Museum2U program is also available in French for teachers to book a classroom program. Lessons include spelling, arithmetic problems, and an elocution lesson with a French tongue twister! The field trip program also includes staff-lead recess activities played both by early European settler children and Indigenous children, as well as some before and after school chores children had to perform.

When asked about the new French offerings, Katrina Pyke, the Coordinator, Museum Operations said, “We always take teacher feedback very seriously, and work to make changes to our program offerings to better meet the needs of educators. In my visits to school principals, and through teacher feedback surveys, I heard loudly and clearly that French immersion schools wanted to experience our programs in French.” The programs offered this fall are just the beginning. Pyke and her team will be working to provide all of the museum’s education programs in both national languages in the future.
