Are You Interested in Running for Pickering City Council?

 The next Municipal Election will be held on October 24, 2022. Individuals interested in filing their nomination must do so in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (the “Act”). 

Who can be a Candidate?

To run for office, you must be eligible to vote in the election. On the day you file your nomination, you must be:

  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years of age or older;
  • a resident in the City of Pickering or the owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and,
  • not ineligible under the Municipal Election Act or any other Act or otherwise prohibited by law to be nominated for or to hold the office.

The following people are disqualified from being elected to municipal office:

  • any person who is not eligible to vote in the municipality
  • an employee of a municipality who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence and resigned
  • a judge of any court
  • an MP, an MPP or a senator
  • an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution

How do I file a Nomination? 

Nominations may be filed in person or by an agent, on the prescribed Form (Form 1), with the Office of the City Clerk beginning on Monday, May 2, 2022 until Thursday, August 18, 2022, during regular business hours (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and on Nomination Day, Friday, August 19, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Nominations must include:

If a nomination for a candidate is filed by an agent, an Appointment of Agent form must be submitted at the time of filing which authorizes the agent to file on behalf of the candidate. The form must be signed by the candidate, and commissioned or notarized by a person authorized under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act or Notaries Act. In addition to this form, an agent must also provide a copy of the candidate's ID to be retained on file.

No person who proposes to be a candidate may solicit or accept contributions for election purposes or incur campaign expenses until a nomination paper has been filed.

Endorsement Signatures

Nominations for an office on a council must be endorsed by at least 25 eligible voters using the prescribed Form (Form 2). Anyone providing an endorsement signature must be eligible to vote in Pickering on the day that they signed the endorsement. In addition to their endorsement, they will also be required to sign a declaration that they are eligible to vote in Pickering.

It is recommended that candidates obtain more the required 25 endorsement signatures in case there are any issues during certification.

When you file your nomination in person at the City Clerk's Office, you will receive a copy of a Ward Map specific to the Ward you will be running in. This Ward Map includes ward boundaries, voting subdivision boundaries and street names. In addition, you will receive a ward-specific listing of street names.
