Interested in working as an Election Official for the upcoming City of Pickering Municipal Election?

For the 2022 Municipal Election, the City will be using an integrated internet and paper ballot voting method. Internet Voting will be conducted throughout the entire Voting Period for eight consecutive days beginning Monday, October 17, 2022 and ending at the close of the polls on Election Day, Monday, October 24, 2022. In-Person, Paper Ballot Voting will only be offered on Election Day, Monday, October 24, 2022.

Voter Assistance Centres (VACs) will be available for electors that do not have access to the internet, need to be added to the Voters’ List, need to obtain a Voter Information Package (VIP), or need assistance with the voting process. Voting Locations will be open on Voting Day, Monday, October 24, 2022, to allow for the use of both paper ballots and internet voting. 

To qualify to work for the 2022 City of Pickering Municipal Election, you must:

  • be a minimum of 18 years of age and cannot be a candidate, or the spouse, partner, parent or child of a candidate;
  • have computer experience;
  • be flexible in working different dates and times during the Voting Period and able to work up to 12 consecutive hours;
  • have access to a vehicle and be able to accept a position at any Voting Centre or Location within the City; and,
  • attend a mandatory training session in late September/early October.

The application period began on July 13, 2022, and ended on August 5, 2022.

Voter Assistant Centres (VACs) and Voting Locations within the City of Pickering

Pay Rate:
October 17, 2022 to October 23, 2022 - $21 per hour 
Election Day, October 24, 2022 - $250-$300 per day based on position (see below)

Available Positions

Election Assistant

  • Period of available work: October 17, 2022 to October 24, 2022;
  • Pay: $21/hr (October 17 to October 23) and $250 on Election Day, October 24, 2022 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session);
  • Assists with the opening and closing of the Voting Location;
  • Greets electors and request that they have proper identification and their Voter Information Package ready;
  • Directs electors to the appropriate Election Officials or voting kiosks to vote;
  • Redistributes empty secrecy folders and pens between the vote tabulator and ballot issuing stations on Election Day; and,
  • Sanitizes voting stations and supplies frequently.

Revision Clerk

  • Period of available work: October 17, 2022 to October 24, 2022;
  • Pay: $21/hr (October 17 to October 23) and $250 on Election Day, October 24, 2022 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session);
  • Assists with the opening and closing of the Voting Location;
  • Assists electors who need to add, change, or remove their name or information on the Voters’ List;
  • Verifies elector eligibility and administers declarations as required;
  • Assists the designated Election Official responsible for re-issuing PINs; and,
  • Assists electors with disabilities or those who require assistance.

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

  • Period of work: October 24, 2022 only (9 am to approximately 9 pm);
  • Pay: $250 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session);
  • Assists with the opening and closing of the Voting Location;
  • Works in collaboration with the Poll Clerk;
  • Issues ballots to eligible electors; and,
  • Maintains a tally of the number of ballots issued and reconciles unused ballots at the close of vote.

Poll Clerk

  • Period of work: October 24, 2022 only (9 am to approximately 9 pm);
  • Pay: $250 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session);
  • Assists with the opening and closing of the Voting Location;
  • Verifies elector eligibility and administers declarations;
  • Works in collaboration with the DRO; and,
  • Locates and strikes off the elector’s name from the electronic Voters’ List.

Vote Tabulator Officer

  • Period of work: October 24, 2022 only (9 am to approximately 9 pm);
  • Pay: $300 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session);
  • Assists with the opening and closing of the Voting Location;
  • Receives ballots from voters and feeds ballots into the vote tabulator;
  • Troubleshoots any vote tabulator issues in accordance with the City’s Voting Procedures; and,
  • Collects and returns voting equipment to City Hall;
  • Assists electors with disabilities or those who require assistance.

Standby Vote Tabulator Officer

  • On-call: October 24, 2022 only (9 am to approximately 9 pm)
  • Standby Pay (if not called upon to assist): $75 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session).
  • Prepares to be dispatched and is trained to fill in for Vote Tabulator Officer (if called upon, the pay will be $300 for the day).

Standby Election Official

  • On-call: October 17, 2022 to October 24, 2022 (9 am to approximately 9 pm);
  • Standby Pay (if not called upon to assist): $75 (includes attendance at a mandatory training session).
  • Prepares to be dispatched and is trained to fill in for any Voting Location position, excluding Vote Tabulator Officer (if called upon, the pay will be the regular pay rate for the position being covered, as advertised).

Hours and Days of Work:

Election Officials will be required to work various hours during the Voting Period, up to twelve (12) hours. Please indicate your availability on the Election Official Application Form.
