The City of Pickering has initiated a GIS Strategic Plan Study
In September 2021, City Council approved the proposal by Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) to prepare a GIS Plan for the City. GIS creates, manages, and analyzes all types of data, which is then connected to a map, integrating location data (where things are geo-spatially) with all types of descriptive information (what those things are/represent). The use of information technology, coupled with a robust GIS, will improve the way the City is tracking service delivery, disseminating data, and engaging the public through the use of various interactive and story telling maps, and open data platforms.
The Corporate GIS Strategic Plan, once approved, will provide a unified GIS vision and five year GIS Implementation and Business Road Map for the City.

The Study Process
GTG’s strategic planning methodology outlines an award-winning strategy for an enterprise, sustainable, scalable and enduring GIS. It included interviewing key stakeholders, evaluating GIS needs and priorities, benchmarking the organization’s existing GIS activities, identifying Best Business Practices (BBP), identifying gaps and opportunities, and presenting the findings to stakeholders and elected officials, using the 10-task project approach. Tasks 1 through 7 have been completed in accordance with the following approved scope of work.
Task 1 – Start-up Meeting
Task 2 – Project kick-off and GIS Technology Seminar
Task 3 - Current Situation and User Needs Assessment
Task 4 - Preliminary Assessment and Evaluation
Task 5 – GIS Vision
Task 6 – Council Report and Presentation
Task 7 – Organizational Planning/Communication
Task 8 – Strategy for Implementation
Task 9 – Corporate GIS Strategic Plan
Task 10 – Final Presentation
Tasks 8 and 9 will be completed in the Fall of 2022, with the final approval of the Plan anticipated in early 2023.
