About the Artwork
In memory of Tom Thompson
Tom Thomson (1877-1917) is considered one of the most important and influential early Canadian artists, and a significant influencer of the Group of Seven. Tom created a distinct approach to portraying rugged Canadian landscapes, and truly represented the best of Canadian Culture. The City of Pickering is privileged to share a small portion of his story.
The final canoe design was selected through a community vote, and is accompanied by interpretive panels about the artist’s birth and art. The panels are taken from a 2017 exhibit at the Pickering Museum Village.
