Celebrating Sustainable Neighbourhoods

The Celebrating Sustainable Neighbourhoods program is about connecting with others in your community and doing activities that make Pickering a better place, environmentally, socially and economically.

Besides having fun, building neighbourhood connections and improving the community, groups can win up to $10,000 for a community enhancing infrastructure project.

Check out this inspiring video about the 2015 neighbourhood activities.

Getting involved is as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4:

  1. Choose your neighbourhood
  2. Choose your sustainability focus (or indicator)
  3. Pick an activity
  4. Register

Program Details

1. Choose Your Neighbourhood

Round up your 'Neighbourhood Group'; it must include at least 5 people who live or work in Pickering. Who you include is up to you; it can be your immediate neighbours, individuals, schools, places of worship, businesses, or organizations.

2. Choose your Sustainability Focus (or indicator)

What are you passionate about? Pickering has 55 indicators of sustainability. We use these to track our progress for becoming a more sustainable city.  The broad and diverse indicators are grouped into 5 categories:  Environment, Society, Economy, ConsumptionDevelopment, making it easy to identify the ones that are most impactful to you.  If you are unsure, we can help you figure out what indicators your activities link to.

3. Pick an Activity

What activity would you and your group like to do? Think about what you are interested in.  It can be simple and easy or more involved if you choose.  We've compiled a list of activity ideas to help you get started, including some that past program participants have enjoyed doing.

Don't forget to register your Neighbourhood Group before you start - you have from March until the end of November to complete your activities! When your activity is over, let us know how it went by filling out the below Activity Wrap-up form. Send pictures or one minute video clips and we'll share them. You just may inspire someone else to take part!

Are you and your group already involved in activities or initiatives that would make a great fit for the program? Register online, or contact us to see how you may already qualify.

The Winning Neighbourhood

After the program wraps up, we invite the participating Neighbourhood Groups to attend a Celebration Event, where each group will have the opportunity to share their activities and successes with their peers, The Mayor, and Members of Council. A peer vote for 'Best Group Effort' will take place at the end of the evening, allowing each group to cast a ballot for who they think put forth the 'Best Group Effort'.

Besides the title 'Best Group Effort', the winning group will have the opportunity to work with the City to identify and implement a community enhancing infrastructure project valued up to $10,000! For more details around the infrastructure project review our project guidelines.
