Responsible Pet Ownership

Did you know that the month of May is known as Responsible Pet Ownership Month?  Every year for the month of May we take part in an Ontario wide initiative to raise awareness about the need for pet owners to exercise their responsibility and be good pet owners.

2016 Activities

Nine-year-old Pickering resident, Tymera, played Vet for the Day in celebration of this year's Responsible Pet Ownership month.

Through Tymera's creative interpretation of what it means to be a responsible pet owner, she won the exciting opportunity to work alongside the professionals at Pickering Animal Hospital. Thank you Dr. Sue Smith, and clinic cat, Thomas, for showing her the ropes, she did a tremendous job!

Spay Neuter Assistance Programs

KittenCity of Pickering Sterilization Program

We have teamed up with veterinarians within Durham Region to offer a low cost spay-neuter assistance program for cats (DR SNAP) here in Pickering.

In order to qualify for the program you must be a Durham Region resident and must be receiving assistance from one of the following government programs:

  • Federal Guaranteed Income Supplement for Seniors (GIS)
  • Ontario Disability Support Payment (ODSP)
  • Canada Pension Plan Disability Payment (CPP Disability)
  • Ontario Works Program

If you qualify for the program you will be given a sterilization voucher that allows you to have your pet sterilized at a participating veterinarian at a reduced rate.

Some veterinarian clinics may require additional vaccines or treatments prior to surgery. Please ask your veterinarian prior to receiving a voucher.

Humane Society of Durham Region Sterilization Program

Tigger

Due to the recognized need for affordable sterilization services for residents in the Durham region, the Toronto Humane Society and Humane Society of Durham  Region (HSDR) are proud to offer transportation services for clients who may not be able to access the Toronto clinic themselves. The Humane Society of Durham Region (HSDR) is located in Whitby. Residents are able to drop off their cat or dog in the evening, their pet is then transported to the Toronto Humane Society for surgery and then they pick their pet up the following evening. Further details, costs and requirements can be found on the Toronto Humane Society website.
