City-wide Fire Ban in Effect for Pickering
Pickering, ON, August 11, 2025 – A city-wide fire ban is in effect for Pickering, beginning Monday, August 11, 2025 until further notice.
The ban has been implemented as a precautionary safety measure in response to extreme fire conditions caused by prolonged drought, high temperatures, and reduced air quality.
What is prohibited
· All outdoor wood fires, including campfires, bonfires, chimineas, fire pits, and outdoor fireplaces
· All burn permits are suspended during this time
What is still allowed
· Propane and natural gas barbecues may be used only for cooking, must be placed on non-combustible surfaces, and located at a safe distance from any structure, combustible materials, dry vegetation, or deck
Why this ban is crucial
· To reduce the risk of accidental fires from embers, sparks, or unattended equipment
· To curtail air quality deterioration amid smoke from ongoing wildfires across Ontario and beyond
· To lessen strain on emergency services
Legal and safety implications
· Violating the Ontario Fire Code may result in a fine of up to $50,000, imprisonment, and liability for any firefighting costs or damages
· Outdoor wood-burning appliances can ignite nearby buildings, decks, patio furniture, fences, and dry vegetation, even when used responsibly
Report a concern
· Emergencies (out-of-control fires): Call 911 immediately
· Other concerns or ban violations: Contact Customer Care at 905.683.7575
Quick facts and public education reminders
· Stay vigilant indoors if air quality is poor, as wildfire smoke can worsen respiratory and cardiac health risks

· Store fuels and fire-starting materials safely, away from heat sources
· Know and share evacuation routes, especially if you live near wooded areas
