Notice of Construction from The Town of Ajax - Church Street Bridge Closure
The Town of Ajax is undertaking its Church Street Bridge Rehabilitation project, which may affect traffic flow and routes for residents in neighbouring communities, including Pickering.
See below for project details, timelines, and detour information. The Church Street Bridge (Bridge 18) over Duffins Creek, located 60 meters North of Highway 401, was constructed in 1960. The roadway bridge is now in need of maintenance and repair, as indicated by lifecycle and condition assessments.
The Town of Ajax has retained KB Civil Constructors Inc. for this work. Please note that the schedule is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and we encourage you to check back to Ajax’s construction notice for any updates.
Purpose: Church Street Bridge Rehabilitation
Duration: July 1, 2025 to September 30, 2025

Closure: From Mill Street to Durham Live Avenue July 1, 2025 to September 30, 2025.

The Church Street Bridge repairs will require a localized closure of the bridge for the duration of construction, to allow for the proposed construction work to be completed.
Westney Road has been designated as a detour route to accommodate northbound and southbound traffic. A detailed detour route plan will be implemented, featuring roadway information signage, updates on the Town of Ajax website, and notifications across social media platforms.
All road closure signage will be posted at least 10 days prior to the closure, in accordance with the Town's Road Occupancy/Road Closure By-Law. Notifications will be sent to nearby residents, emergency services, School Boards, and Durham Region Transit before any closures take place.
The Church Street Bridge will be closed to all through traffic. However, safe access to the trail system will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists near both the North and South ends of the bridge closure. This will allow for a detour around the closure and construction zone, over the Duffins Creek.
Every effort will be made to complete the construction work as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimize the closure's duration.
Description of work:
- Waterproofing, removal and replacement of existing asphalt on the bridge deck
- Excavation and rock protection to rectify severe erosions at the South Pier
- Partial depth concrete removal and repairs of the abutments, piers, and girders
- Jacking of superstructure
- Implementation of a work area and scaffolding
In the event major deliveries have been pre-scheduled, please inform the project contact ahead of time, and the Town will do its utmost to accommodate.
The Town of Ajax realizes that the construction work will be disruptive. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience during this time, and we will make every effort to complete the construction work as quickly as possible. For additional information and project updates please visit the Construction Map as well as the Town’s social media platforms.
