Enbridge Gas Program

There is a video circulating online that makes false and misleading claims about the City of Pickering’s agreement with Enbridge Gas. The video incorrectly suggests that the City has access to household-level data, that residents are being tracked without their consent, and that private data has been sold for $10,000. These statements are entirely untrue.

To be clear – the City of Pickering does not collect, track, or sell individual household data. The data received from Enbridge is aggregated at the postal code level and grouped into account types (residential, industrial, and commercial). It cannot be linked to any individual home or business.

This information is being provided to the City as part of Enbridge’s Municipal Climate Action Incentive Offer (MCAI) – a program that supports municipalities in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency. Access to aggregated postal code level energy consumption data is a standard requirement of the program and helps municipalities better understand community-wide trends.

Through its participation in the MCAI program, the City received $10,000 in funding in both 2023 and 2024, supporting projects such as energy related design work in community facilities, education, and outreach programs. These initiatives help lower costs, reduce emissions, and connect residents with grant and rebate opportunities that they may not otherwise know about.

It is important to emphasize that:

  • The City does not receive household-specific data.
  • The City does not monitor personal energy use.
  • No private data has been sold for $10,000.

Pickering has a long history of participating in energy and climate programs, and we remain committed to finding ways to support both residents and businesses in lowering costs and improving sustainability.
