Mayor Ashe Congratulates Prime Minister Carney and the Re-elected Liberal Government

Pickering, ON, April 28, 2025 – On behalf of the City of Pickering and its Members of Council, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the re-election of the Liberal Government.

This federal election was the most consequential in our lifetime, with millions of Canadians from coast to coast to coast casting their ballots to determine the future of our great nation. Your government has been entrusted with a mandate to defend Canadian sovereignty against President Trump’s threats, by adopting an ‘elbows up’ approach and advancing economic independence through stronger internal trade and domestic investment.

As one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, Pickering is eager to partner with the Government of Canada to navigate these unprecedented times, while working together to strengthen our nation’s resilience.

Shifting focus from national priorities, it is equally vital to address the financial challenges facing municipalities through a modernized fiscal framework that directly supports residents, businesses, and local economies. At the same time, we must work together to protect our environment and natural heritage landscape.

As part of this commitment, I look forward to working with MP-elect Nathan and the Carney Government to secure a $10 million federal contribution as part of a tri-party funding agreement with the Provincial Government for the acquisition of Frenchman’s Bay. Transitioning this vital natural asset into public stewardship will ensure it is preserved for future generations and permanently safeguarded against unwelcome development.
