Pickering Adopts Sunflower Symbol to Support Residents with Non-Visible Disabilities
Pickering, ON, November 20, 2025 – The City of Pickering is proud to announce its participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, reinforcing its commitment to providing inclusive, safe, and welcoming spaces and services for all.
Through this globally recognized program, individuals with hidden or non-visible disabilities can discreetly signal their need for support by wearing the Sunflower symbol, or if they prefer, seek out staff wearing Sunflower lanyards, which indicate that they have been trained in the program. By voluntarily sharing that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent, they can comfortably signal a need for an extra helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.
“Providing exceptional customer service is at the heart of what we do,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “We understand that building a truly inclusive community means giving people the tools to express their needs in ways that feel safe and comfortable. This program is a natural extension of how we strive to deliver meaningful service – by listening, adapting, and creating a respectful environment where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued. It’s who we are.”
All City staff, including seasonal hires, will be trained in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. This move enhances equitable access to City programs and services, while strengthening staff’s ability to serve the community with empathy and awareness.
The City will promote the launch of this new program through its various communication channels, City facilities, and customer service touchpoints. It will also be featured during key recognition dates, such as National AccessAbility Week, which celebrates the contributions of people living with disabilities and underscores the importance of removing barriers to full participation in society.
Customers can request a Sunflower symbol (pin, lanyard, or waterproof wristband), free of charge, in person at the City’s Customer Care counter, by email, or by telephone at: 905.683.7575, beginning the first week of December.
