A note on Halloween Costumes

This is a reminder that people’s identities are not costumes to be worn. Costumes grounded in discriminatory, racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, and/or ideologies that may offend or cause harm, are not appropriate under any circumstance.

In Pickering’s diverse community, we must remember that everyone has varied lived experiences and worldviews. It is important to be considerate of this and be proactive in ensuring that everyone has a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable Halloween.

Here are some questions to consider to ensure that your costume choice is mindful and socially conscious at the event and throughout the Halloween season:

  1. Does my costume perpetuate a stereotype associated with any group of people or community based on race/ethnicity, religion, gender, ability, or any other aspect of one's identity?
  2. Does my costume represent any group of people or community or feature a garment or item with significance to a particular culture, religion, or other community group?
  3. Does my costume depict a historical time-period which is considered offensive and discriminatory?
  4. Does my costume represent a culture or an element of a culture that people are discriminated against for being, wearing, and/or practicing?
  5. Can I say without a doubt that people will not be offended when seeing my costume?

Halloween can be spooky and scary, but it never needs to be offensive, discriminatory, or harmful. Please take great care in selecting a costume this year.
