Heritage Tree
Hooman Mehdizadehjafari, Heritage Tree
Heritage Tree celebrates the living fabric of community and memory—how our stories, like the branches of a great pine, reach ever upward while remaining deeply grounded in shared roots.
About the Artwork
Designed for the main entrance of the Dorsay Community & Heritage Centre, Heritage Tree reflects both the character of its site and the purpose of the Centre itself. The Centre unites a library, museum, and community facilities under one roof—a place where people come together to share stories and strengthen collective identity. Surrounded by a mature pine forest, the present natural landscape deepens this sense of belonging. The towering red and eastern white pines (Ontario’s provincial tree) frame the site with a striking presence visible from Highway 7.
Inspired by the elegance and enduring symbolism of the eastern white pine, this artwork takes shape as a tribute to resilience, growth, and communal connection.
Heritage Tree symbolizes the continuous exchange of knowledge and tradition across generations. The sculpture features stylized, human-like figures that interconnect and rise together, supporting one another in an upward, tree-like formation. This structure creates a visual dialogue between human relationships and the natural growth of trees. Each figure represents members of the community—families, friends, neighbours, and coworkers, etc.—whose shared stories cultivate a collective sense of identity. Ascending vertically, the piece stands as a symbol of rootedness and aspiration, bridging past, present, and future.
