Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the City of Pickering resides on land within the Treaty and traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and Williams Treaties signatories of the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations. Pickering is also home to many Indigenous persons and communities who represent other diverse, distinct, and autonomous Indigenous nations. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships with the First Peoples of Canada, and to the ancestral lands on which we learn, share, work, and live.

The City of Pickering is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community where diversity is recognized and celebrated.

Each month, we highlight significant cultural, historical, and equity-related observances that encourage reflection, learning, and mutual respect among all Pickering residents.

Note: The following list highlights key equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) observances recognized throughout the month of November. It is not an exhaustive list of all significant cultural, religious, and commemorative dates. December 1

December 1 is World AIDS Day. On this day, people around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV, and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS.

This day is an opportunity to raise awareness; commemorate those who have passed away and celebrate victories, such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. Learn more about World AIDS Day.
December 2 December 2 is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. The focus of this day is eradicating contemporary forms of slavery such as human trafficking sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage and other forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict. December 3 December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities This day recognizes the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and aims to raise awareness of the social, political, cultural, and economic aspects that impact persons with disabilities right to participate. December 6 The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, is a day commemorated in Canada each December 6, the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, in which fourteen women were murdered and ten others injured in a violent act of misogyny. Today, we mourn the loss and remember the lives of all those who have experienced gender-based violence and reaffirm our commitment to educating ourselves and our communities on gender-based violence, centering the voices of survivors in our actions and speaking up against harmful behaviours. December 10 Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10 — the day on which the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.The Declaration states that each person is entitled to fundamental rights, including the right to equality, and the right to life, liberty and security of the person. It also recognizes the right to freedom of religion and speech and the right to participate in the cultural life of the community.Learn more about Human Rights Day.
December 14-22 Hanukkah is a Jewish celebration lasting eight days. In 2025, it begins on December 14 and ends on December 22. This holiday is celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, prayers, special foods and gathering with loved ones. Learn more about Hanukkah.
December 18 December 18 is proclaimed as International Migrants Day, to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. This day recognizes that international migration is a growing phenomenon that yields positive benefits for countries of origin and destination. Learn more about International Migrants Day.
December 25 Christmas Day is a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. This holiday is celebrated by Christians all over the world through various customs and practices including attending religious services, exchanging gifts and connecting with loved ones. December 26 - January 1  Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African American and Pan-African cultures and heritage that takes place from December 26 to January 1. Originating in the United States, each day is dedicated to one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. The City of Pickering is committed to embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into the fabric of its organization and community to foster a sense of belonging, empowerment and respect for all. We strive to develop policies, practices and programs that advance EDI as a standard of public service by engaging diverse perspectives and experiences, eliminating systemic barriers, and promoting community cohesion.

The City approved its first EDI Strategy in May 2024. This foundational document is essential to ensuring that our organization prioritizes equity, diversity and inclusion at every level of decision making and operations so that our policies, programs, services and facilities reflect and serve the diverse needs of the community.

The Strategy identifies five priority areas of focus and recommendations for action related to:

  1. Education and Awareness
  2. Structure and Resources
  3. Community Consultation and Engagement
  4. Policies, Practices and Programs
  5. Measurement and Accountability

Areas of Focus

By implementing an EDI Strategy, the City will have the framework to enhance existing government policies and practices for staff, residents, and the broader community.
