Pickering Museum Village is Durham Region’s largest open-air museum located in the scenic valley of Pickering, Ontario. Just minutes from Highway 407 and Pickering City Centre, our site offers a unique blend of heritage architecture, engaging programming, and modern amenities tailored for motor coach tourism. The Museum is close to major transportation routes such as the 407, 401, and Highway 7. Close to the City Centre, Casino, restaurants, accommodations, and more.

The newly developed Dorsay Community and Heritage Centre (DCHC) features a temporary gallery, café, gift shop, rest spaces, accessible washrooms, a patio, and flexible program space. In the museum village, guests will find a gift shop/snack bar, picnic shelter, and dedicated areas for tourism package programming. 

Group Tourism Packages

Programs are 2.5 hours in length and feature hands-on activities and exhibits. Take time before or after to spend some time in our gift shop or relax outside in our many serene spaces.

All About Anne

Plan a stop on your motor coach tour at Pickering Museum, the filming site for various movies and television shows including Sullivan Productions’ Anne of Green Gables movies, featuring Megan Follows, and episodes of television shows the Road to Avonlea and Anne with an E. This tour includes workshop activities inspired by the beloved books with details about the site’s filming locations. 

Add-ons: Conclude your morning (or begin your afternoon) with afternoon tea featuring our signature tea blend and assorted sandwiches and sweets. During tea, we’ll treat you to a fashion slide show of clothing styles in fashion during the time period of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne series of books. The menu will feature desserts mentioned in the books, such as raspberry cordial, caramel tarts, and liniment cake (raspberry layer cake). 

War on Whisky

Include Pickering Museum on your bus tour stop and we’ll bring to life the roaring 1920s. You’ll dabble in mocktail mixology (we’re a dry establishment), fashion accessories, and explore the museum and its exhibits with a self-directed activity passport about bootlegging and temperance. This tour includes workshop activities inspired by the Roaring 1920s and bootlegging of alcohol. 

Add-ons: Conclude your morning (or begin your afternoon) with a 1920s-inspired picnic on our grounds. Assorted sandwiches and sweets highlighting some fun food trends of the decade will be served along with ginger ale.  

Spine Tingling

What museum doesn’t have its share of hauntings? Explore funerary customs of the Victorians, the Victorian obsession with spiritualism through seances, and enjoy a self-directed quest to explore the museum’s grounds and exhibits (it might just lead you to a behind-the-scenes peek at our hearse! This 2.5-hour itinerary ensures a day filled with eerie excitement and historical experiences, perfect for those seeking a spine-tingling adventure! 

Add-ons: Return for a late-night guided tour of the museum village when all is dark. Our tour guides will share spine-tingling tales of local hauntings and paranormal activity within the historic buildings, and you’ll even have a chance to try out some ghost hunting tools – if you dare. We’ll take the chill off your night with warm cider and soul cakes before you leave. Also available during daytime hours.

Education

Discover fun, hands-on programs created especially for young learners on the move! Tourism operators may book a half-day session or stay longer for lunch and an afternoon of deeper discovery. With groups capped at around 19 students, each program offers a more personal and engaging learning adventure.

Programs

Step back in time and embark on an interactive journey to freedom. Students will explore the inspiring story of George Chapman, an early Black settler who escaped enslavement in Virginia and found freedom in Canada. Through primary source exploration and hands-on activities, students will learn about George, the Underground Railroad, the significance of quilt codes, and the challenges faced by freedom seekers. This program visits the Log Barn and outdoor spaces.

Grade 6 - Communities in Canada, Past and Present, Canada’s interactions with the Global Community; Grade 7 – New France and British North America, Canada, 1800-1850: Conflict and Challenges; Grade 8 – Creating Canada, Global Settlement Patterns 

Continue the UGRR learning adventure with an immersive add-on program that delves more deeply into the experiences of freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. Students will engage in orienteering activities, map out escape routes using quilt codes, and explore and respond to the powerful art installation "The Way Gone Made Clear" by Georgia Fullerton. This program visits the Brougham Temperance House and outdoor grounds.  Note: this program may be booked only in conjunction with Follow the Drinking Gourd:

Pickering Township was a hotbed of political unrest in the 1830s. Through role-play, students will step into the shoes of real historical figures from the Family Compact, government sympathizers, and radical reformers, exploring the physical, social and political challenges that lead to the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion.  They will debate, map, and navigate the era’s complexities, deciding if they align with Reformers or Tories. This program visits the Log Barn, Brougham Temperance House, and outdoor spaces.

Grade 8 – Canada, 1800–1850: Conflict and Challenges, Civics and Citizenship: Civic Engagement and Action 

Enhance your students' historical journey with this add-on program, designed to delve deeper into the political intrigue and social upheaval of the 1830s. This immersive experience builds on the "Roots to Rebellion" foundation, offering a more comprehensive exploration of the Upper Canada Rebellion. Through engaging role-play and interactive lessons, students will uncover the complexities of early elections, the shift from peaceful reform to armed rebellion, and the lasting impact on Canadian democracy. This program visits the Log House, Brougham Temperance House, and outdoor spaces. 

Curriculum Connections:

An add-on program is under development to complement the Follow the Drinking Gourd program and will lengthen the time spent on the museum site for a more impactful educational experience.

Yes, our site includes accessible washrooms, ramps, and pathways to ensure all guests can enjoy the experience. Our grounds are uneven, and the path from the DCHC is a steep elevation. For guests with severe mobility restrictions, contact us to discuss changes we can make for your participants’ comfort. 

Yes, we offer a dedicated bus turnaround and parking area for motor coaches. 

Yes, we have a café in the DCHC and a snack bar in the museum village. Add-on picnic lunches or themed teas are available depending on the package. 

We provide complimentary refreshments and lounge spaces for drivers and organizers to relax during the visit. 

Yes, we offer flexible scheduling and can include time for exhibit exploration or gift shop visits. 

Our packages are designed for groups of 15 to 56 guests. Larger groups may be accommodated with advance notice.
