Role: The mandate of the Accessibility Advisory Committee is to fulfill the duties as outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and to provide advice to Council on programs, policies and services provided to persons with disabilities.

Number of Vacancies: Up to ten (10)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Awareness and knowledge of potential barriers to public access of facilities, spaces, programs and services to people living with a disability would be an asset.

The majority of the Committee must be comprised of individuals living with a disability.  For candidates not living with a disability, consideration will be given to other experiences or expertise regarding accessibility or supporting people with disabilities.

While disclosing personal information is optional, this information is helpful to the City in ensuring a well-represented, AODA-compliant committee. Any disclosure you make regarding a disability will be maintained in confidence by the City pursuant to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Role:  A quasi-judicial committee, hearing appeals relating to Orders to Restrain issued under the provisions of the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law, as amended. The Committee has the ability to amend the order, permit a follow up review of the Order, or quash the Order.

Number of Vacancies: Two (2)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Committee members who have experience as dog owners, dog trainers, or animal
behaviour would be an asset.

Meetings: Meetings are scheduled as required to hear appeals.

Role: The Committee of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body that hears considerations of consents for land severance and minor variances to the City’s Zoning By-laws. The committee is a local board which is appointed by Council, and is established under the Planning Act.

Committee Responsibilities:

• Review materials filed with each application;
• Conduct individual site inspections of the subject properties to assess the impacts the proposal may have on the surrounding area; and,
• Attend and participate at all public meetings (virtually and/or in-person) scheduled for their respective panels.

Number of Vacancies: Five (5)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Individuals should have a demonstrated commitment and interest in the community, and the committee membership should reflect a balanced representation from the areas of planning, construction and lay people.

Meetings: Generally held every second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm, as well as any additional Special Meeting(s) as required.

Role: The Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee (CSWBAC) will identify and coordinate opportunities for stakeholder and community engagement and provide community input on matters relating to the City of Pickering Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Plan. The CSWBAC will also support  City staff in the ongoing development, consultation, and implementation of the City of Pickering CSWB Plan (2024-2029), and will also assist with early engagement and planning activities in advance of the subsequent CSWB Plan. The Committee will establish and support a Homelessness Subcommittee comprised of members and external stakeholders. The Subcommittee will work in co-ordination with Durham Region and community partners to identify priorities and support initiatives related to homelessness, including programs, services, training, events, and community engagement. The Subcommittee will provide input and advocacy on system gaps, including mental health, substance use and the  transitional and supportive housing in Pickering. 

Number of Vacancies: Up to ten (10)

Qualifications: Skills, knowledge, and experience suitable to contribute to one or more of the Priority Risk Areas identified as part of the Region of Durham CSWB Plan. Membership will be sought based on broad interest, understanding and commitment to CSWB development in the municipality. 

Meetings: Quarterly meetings held at 7:00 pm. Dates to be determined by the Committee at its first meeting of the term.

Role: The Cultural Advisory Committee (CAC) will identify and coordinate opportunities for stakeholder and community engagement and provide community input on matters relating to the provision of cultural services, including the Pickering Museum Village. The CAC will assist City staff with the implementation of the Cultural Strategic Plan.

Number of Vacancies: Up to ten (10)

Term: until November 14, 2028, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Membership will be sought on the basis of broad interest, understanding and commitment to cultural development in the municipality, in addition to specific expertise and interest related to culture.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas is considered an asset:

• professional art;
• cultural business;
• graphic design;
• architecture or landscape design;
• performing arts;
• music;
• festival or event planning; and,
• historical and heritage fields of study.

Meetings: Third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Role: The Heritage Pickering Advisory Committee (HPAC) was established by City Council, under the authority of the Ontario Heritage Act, for the purpose of identifying sites and structures appropriate for conservation and advising Council on heritage conservation issues.

Number of Vacancies: Up to nine (9)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Knowledge and skill in the following areas is considered an asset:

• heritage related research
• architecture and design
• restoration, conservation, and construction
• history and genealogy
• planning and geography

Role: A Livestock Valuer is appointed by a municipality to investigate injury or death to livestock and/or poultry caused by wildlife as set out in Section 7(6) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Act.

• Enhance the shared experience and opportunities of Black residents;
• Implement tangible and sustainable actions to support the prevention, reduction, and response to systemic and institutional anti-Black racism in Pickering for all community members;
• Foster transparency and accountability in identifying and addressing systemic and institutional anti-Black racism within Pickering;
• Identify and coordinate opportunities for community engagement; and,
• Celebrate, conserve, and promote the Black community and Black culture, heritage, and history.

Number of Vacancies: Up to twenty (20)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications: Skills, knowledge, and lived experience needed to contribute effectively to Taskforce goals and objectives. Membership will be sought on the basis of broad interest, understanding and commitment to the development of anti-Black racism initiatives in the municipality, in addition to specific expertise and interests related to Black business, culture, education, employment, health, heritage, and safety, among other areas.

Meetings: First Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Role: In accordance with the Public Libraries Act, public libraries in Ontario must be operated under the management and control of a public library board. The board has the authority to make policies about the operations and services of the public library.

Number of Vacancies: Eight (8)

Term: until November 14, 2030, or until a successor is appointed.

Qualifications:

• Awareness of local and other laws which affect libraries and play an active role in
  initiating and supporting beneficial Library legislation;
• Attend all Board and committee meetings as assigned;
• Ability to be an effective advocate for the Library in the community;
• Interest in the Library, the community and their inter-relationship;
• Knowledge of the community’s social and economic condition;
• Aptitude for planning – both long and short range; and,
• Ability to work in a political environment.

Meetings: Fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Role: A quasi-judicial tribunal, hearing appeals to Property Standards Orders issued under the authority of the Building Code Act. The Committee may confirm, amend or quash an Order.

Qualifications: Committee members with experience in building construction or property maintenance would be an asset.

Role: A quasi-judicial committee to review appeals in accordance with the provisions of the Vehicle for Hire By-law. The Committee will also provide recommendations regarding fares and other issues which may arise within the vehicle for hire industry.

Qualifications: Resident members must be a minimum of 18 years of age and reside in Pickering. Committee members shall contribute time, knowledge, skill and expertise to the fulfillment of the committee’s mandate.
