Road, Bridge, and Infrastructure Projects – Brock Road Corridor & Vicinity

Project lead: Ministry of Transportation of Ontario 

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is carrying out rehabilitation and emergency repair work in the Brock Road and Highway 401 area. 

The work includes portions of Brock Road, the CN overpass structure, and the Highway 401 bridge. 

This project will help maintain critical transportation infrastructure and support the safe movement of people and goods through an important regional corridor.  

Construction impacts:

• The eastbound Highway 401 on-ramp at Brock Road is currently closed and is expected to reopen in late fall 2026. The nearest eastbound Highway 401 access points are at Whites Road in Pickering and Westney Road in Ajax.
• Expect significant traffic delays. Brock Road is reduced to two lanes in each direction for the duration of the project.
• A series of additional weekend lane closures is planned for August and September to accelerate critical emergency repairs to the Highway 401 bridge. During these closures, Brock Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Friday at 10:00 pm until Monday at 5:00 am. 

Planned weekend closures:

• Closure 1: Tentatively scheduled from Friday, August 21 at 10:00 pm until Monday, August 24 at 5:00 am.

Additional closure dates will be posted here as they are confirmed. 

The weekend closures are required so the Ministry’s contractor can safely remove and repair large sections of deteriorated concrete beneath the bridge lanes without live traffic travelling overhead.

Project lead: Durham Live Tourist Destination (Developer: Triple Properties Inc.) 

The Brock Road and Bayly Street area is expected to undergo road and infrastructure improvements to support growth and transportation needs.  

Motorists will experience lane restrictions, turning movement changes, intermittent delays, and temporary traffic pattern changes during construction.  

These improvements are designed to support safer, more efficient travel for residents, businesses, and visitors in this busy and growing area of the city. 

Design is currently underway. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2026 and conclude in early 2027. 

Construction highlights/impacts: 

• Adding second southbound left turn lane on Brock Road 
• Extended turning lanes on Bayly Street 
• Signal timing adjustments, and other capacity upgrades to support increased traffic to and from the Durham Live Site development

Project lead: Region of Durham  

The Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit project is a major regional transit initiative that will improve transit service across Durham Region and into Scarborough. 

As work advances, motorists will experience lane shifts, temporary lane closures, and other traffic changes near active construction areas, including sections affecting Pickering. 

Once complete, the project is expected to support more reliable transit service, improve travel times, provide enhanced cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and strengthen connections across the region. 

Construction highlights/impacts: 

Preparation for the Kingston Road BRT segment from Steeple Hill to Merritton Road is underway, with construction expected to start in July 2026 and be completed by the end of 2028. 

The next segment, from Dixie Road to Bainbridge Drive, is expected to begin construction in August/September 2026 and be completed by fall 2029. This segment will directly affect the Brock Road and Kingston Road intersection and vicinity.

Service Announcement - Notice of Temporary Road Closure

Purpose: Required for the reconstruction of Montgomery Park Road.
Duration: Monday, May 11, 2026, to Thursday, October 1, 2026

Temporary road closure of Montgomery Park Road, east of Brock Road to the south east end of Montgomery Park Road. The Waterfront Trail will remain open during construction. The public washroom facility close to the Waterfront Trail crossing on Montgomery Park Road will be closed. Portable washrooms will be available on Frisco Road close to the Waterfront Trail.

Vehicle detours have been provided, and all applicable signage will be posted.

Project lead: Ontario Power Generation 

Ontario Power Generation is advancing preparations for the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, a major long-term infrastructure project that will support Ontario’s electricity system for decades to come. 

The refurbishment represents one of the largest economic opportunities in the region’s history, strengthening local businesses, creating thousands of jobs, and reinforcing Pickering’s role as a cornerstone of Canada’s clean energy future. As planning and related work continue, residents may notice increased project activity and construction-related traffic in areas connected to the Pickering Nuclear site and surrounding road network. 

This project is expected to support long-term energy reliability, local employment, and broader economic benefits across Ontario. 

Construction highlights/impacts:  

• To help manage the impacts of increased daily vehicle and heavy-equipment traffic, the City is actively working with OPG on planned upgrades to Sandy Beach Road and Montgomery Park Road ahead of the refurbishment, as per the Council approved Road Servicing Agreement (Resolution # 767/25). 
• Phase 1 works on both roads were completed in 2025. Phase 2 works, which will bring the project to completion, are expected to commence in April 2026 and be completed by year end. Road closures and detour routes will be in effect during construction. 
• Pickering Nuclear Refurbishment work is scheduled to begin in January 2027 and span approximately seven to eight years.
